After 6 days of constant care, hope, love, prayer, and affection, Mark and I decided it was time to send Millie to Dog Heaven. This was an incredibly difficult decision and one that came along with lots of tears (from me) and a few sleepless nights. We did all we knew how to do for Millie but she wasn't getting better. Plus, after our last visit to the vet where he said he thought she had suffered neurological damage and possible blindness due to the heat, we decided it was best to send her to a place where she could see, run, and enjoy life again as a healthy dog.

To us, Millie is a Wonder Dog. It is amazing that she survived at least 2 days of extreme temperatures while being buried in mud and water while only a puppy. She went from not being able to walk or stand to taking a few steps off her bed and remaining standing while outside. Millie also went from not wanting to eat or drink to loving Vienna Sausages (see above picture) and orange Pedialyte. More importantly, she came from an abusive place to a home where she was unconditionally loved. Even her surrogate sisters cared for her, especially Dixie (peeking over the baby gate at Millie).

Mark and I each decided to honor Millie in a special way. I decided every dog needed to have the enjoyment of eating a Frostie Paw frozen treat so I gave Millie that as her last meal this morning. She loved it! I sure hope they serve Frostie Paws in Heaven!

Mark will be spreading her ashes in a special place where he believes Millie would have loved to be the hunting dog she was supposed to be (she's a Pointer). We are also going to set up a little stone memorial for her in our backyard.
Millie was brought into our lives for a reason. She needed love and we were the family to give it to her. Mark worked extremely hard to nurse her back to health and I was his assistant. Although Millie did not make the recovery we had initially hoped for, to us, she will always be a Wonder (and wonderful) Dog.
Thank you to our friends, family, and co-workers who kept us and Millie in their thoughts and prayers for the past few days. We truly appreciate the phone calls, e-mails, and check-ups and are so grateful to have such caring people in our lives.
