Mark and I had to make the VERY tough and VERY sad decision to put our 12 year old Jack Russell Terrier,
Bandera Jane, down yesterday. I think it is safe to say that both our hearts are broken. Our house this morning was very quite and Dixie is feeling the effects of
Bandera's loss as well.
In the 4 years I have known Mark, I have never met a friend of Mark's that hasn't had a story about
Bandera. They usually start with, "oh, when I was with
Bandera...." and then continue about something
Bandera did. Although this might hurt some owners to know their dog is followed by a reputation, it made me love
Bandera even more because the truth is, she was not always a great dog. She watched TV with us and hated anything that had animation, animals, or a doorbells -- most shows have one of these components, just so you know. She barked
a lot. She didn't get along with children and was hesitant about meeting new humans (minus her four favorite people: Julian, Brian, Lindsey, and John). She loved chasing birds and the neighbor's dog along the fence line in our backyard. And, she hated when you bumped her while she was sleeping at your feet in bed. Despite all these not-so-perfect qualities, she was wonderful to me.
Although
Bandera was originally Mark's dog, she quickly changed to my dog (Dixie's heart belongs to Mark so this worked well for our little family). She loved curling up with me in a warm blanket while I read a book or even just in my lap to watch TV, she loved crunching on a piece of cereal and finishing my yogurt in the morning, she was always a great nurse to us when we were sick, but most of all, she was my loyal companion (and protector) during hunting season when Mark and Dixie took off for a little duck fun.
My favorite thing Mark did with
Bandera was to make her dance. She was really good at rapping and doing the "Staying Alive" move. That always made me smile and laugh.
Bandera will always live in our memories as the most wonderfully terrible dog two people could ever own. She will be greatly missed though I am sure (and told her) that she will be very happy chasing birds to her hearts content at Rainbow Bridge with all the other dogs that families are missing. We will always love our
Bandera Jane (and already miss her terribly)! Yesterday was a very sad day for both us.
